Pneumatic Cylinders vs Electric Rod Actuators

Over the last few years, technology and automated technology have been growing and evolving. During this time there has been a wide range of different needs and wants from automation technology, whether that’s how accurate and detailed machines are or even how often these machines need maintenance. Therefore, this has led to many different opinions and views about what types of technology are better. From force and motion to reliability, each piece of equipment has its own pros and cons. This blog will explore pneumatic cylinders and electric rod actuators to see which one is better for linear motion.

Pneumatic Cylinders

You probably know that pneumatic cylinders are the older and more popular type of equipment for linear motion in the technology industry. They are known to be simpler and last longer and can be seen as good value for money, as well as having an extremely strong force too. However, in recent years as technology has developed electric rod actuators are now seen as an alternative option for linear motion. They are much more precise and reliable and many people are now using them as their preferred option.

Pneumatic cylinders definitely have a track record of being strong and powerful, with their actual technology being less expensive to manufacture and therefore buy. However, its cons come with its lack of control and the increased amount of maintenance and checks they typically require.

Electric Rod Actuators

Electric rod actuator's pros are based on them having significantly more precision and detail, which is really important, as well as their reliability. Actuators also allow you to collect data easily and they do not require as much maintenance either. Whilst they are more costly, their long lifespan should mean it’ll work its cost back over time, but it certainly is an investment.
